Blog # 3 - The Iliad

Please read chapters 4 & 5 and  respond to the following prompts.  Write in complete sentences.  Give specific examples from the text.  Incorporate quotes when stipulated.

Chapter 4
1.  Which literary term is at work in the following quote?  "As a waterfall pours down the face of a cliff into the dark stream below, so Agamemnon stood weeping before the gathering" (58).

2.  What are some of the gifts Agamemnon bestows upon Achilles?  Use a quote as support.  What would the gifts be equivalents of today?  What do we call them?

3.  I've already posed this question, but what is Achilles's biggest character flaw?  What is he unable to do?

4.  What would you choose?  A long life or everlasting fame?  Which does Achilles choose?

5.  What is Achille's rationale for not joining in the fighting?  Use a quote as support.

Chapter 5
1.  Many words and phrases are continually repeated, as we discussed in the introduction to The Iliad.  Please cite 3.

2.  What is the equivalent of Achilles's and Patroclus's relationship in Japan?  What might we call it in other words?

3.  Explain the following quote.  Achilles is speaking to Patroclus.  "Win enough glory that the Greeks will return Briseis to me along with many impressive gifts, but not so much glory that your success will less my own honor" (62).

4.  We see a lot of interference of the gods in this section.  Does this lessen or increase the mortals' free will?  How much free will do you have in your life right now?  Who or what restricts it?  When will you get more free will?

5.  To me this story deals extensively with leadership.  Choose Agamemnon or Achilles and argue why he is the better leader.  One paragraph.  Use at least one quote.

  1. Chapter 4.

    1. The quote is an example of a simile. It compares the weeping eyes of Agamemnon to a waterfall pouring down the face of a cliff.

    2. Some of the gifts Agamemnon bestows upon Achilles are "seven new tripods, untouched by fire; the weight of ten talents in gold; twenty shining cauldrons" and many other glamourous gifts (59). Agamemnon proposes these gifts as a "bribe" for Achilles to return to battle. Examples of today would be a friend asking you to help them with homework, and they bribe you with some snacks.

    3. Achilles's character flaw is his failure to stand up for himself. Overall, his heart is weak, and lacks the confidence to make decisions on his own. He relies on the gods to choose his decisions

    4. I would choose a long life like Achilles. It is better to enjoy the little things in life than die for something big. Fame does not necessarily let you gain happiness. I prefer a long lasting life rich with experiences.

    5. Achilles rationale for not joining the fight is that he does "not need the long-haired Greeks" to honor" him (61). "Zeus, lord of Olympus" has already honored him and he will be honored as long as he lives. Also, Achilles is also angry at Agamemnon for dishonoring him and stealing his prize of honor, fair Briseis, and therefore wants to teach Agamemnon a lesson.

    Chapter 5

    1. a. The phrase "the bronze-coated Greeks" is used frequently (63).
    b. Agamemnon is commonly described as "wide-ruling Agamemnon" (62).
    c. "Three times Patroclus climbed upon a corner of the high wall, and three times the lord of the silver bow raised his immortal hands" (63).

    2. I cannot really come up with an equivalent relationship in Japan.

    3. What Achilles means by that quote is that he wants Patroclus to succeed in attaining glory for him, but not too much that all the honor is applied to Patroclus himself. In other words, Achilles still has pride for his feared figure.

    4. I think it lessens the mortals' free will. For example, when Patroclus goes out to battle with Achilles's armor, Apollo stops him as he attempts to climb over the walls of Priam. He tells Patroclus that it is not his "fate to sack the city of Priam" (63). I have enough free will, but I am still restricted by my parents from venturing far with my bicycle alone. When I am an adult I will get free will and be responsible fo all my doings.

    5. I believe Agamemnon is the better leader of the two. Although he fails to successfully lead the Greeks to battle, his voice depicts the traits of a leader. He is greedy, and perhaps selfish, yet compared to Achilles's, Agamemnon seems to possess the aura that a leader should have. I think Achilles makes a great warrior which everybody relies on, yet does not have the authoritative power to stand up for himself. Achilles even refuses to go to battle and tells Patroclus "'I would not rejoin the Greeks until Hector threatened my own ships'" (62). This is not an attitude a leader should possess.

  2. Chapter 4

    1. Literary term being used in this quote is personification. It refers as a cliff having a face, which is impossible, but it can be used as a personification in writing.

    2. The gifts that Agamemnon bestows includes "seven new tripods, untouched by fire; the weight of ten talents in gold; twenty shining cauldrons; and twelve strong, swift, prize-winning horses" to address his sign of apology towards Achilles. This is a form of bribing, and it still does exist in our world today.

    3. Achilles weak side of his personality is that he depends on gods for his struggles and fears, and is sometimes gullible by them.

    4. Achilles chose to live a longer life than everlasting fame. I would choose to live longer rather than everlasting fame because I can enjoy and be happy while throughout my lifetime. Everlasting fame might be nice while I am living, but in my opinion, I feel that there would be no point in carrying everlasting fame through generation when I’m dead because I wouldn’t be existing, and I won’t be able to feel all the honor and admiration.

    5. Achille’s rationale for not joining the war is that so he can live longer and go back to his homeland. Like the question above, he chooses to live longer than everlasting fame, so he prefers to go back because if he stays and fight, he will “never live to return home” to live happily back in his homeland.

    Chapter 5

    1. “far-shooting Apollo” (48). “wide-ruling Agamemnon” (48). “man-slaying Hector” (50).

    2. Patroclus and Achilles share a very meaningful friendship towards each other.

    3. I think this quote means that Achilles wants Patroclus to gain victory and honor in the fight, but Achilles doesn’t want Patroclus getting all the honor and the credit because Achilles feels that he had contributed the most in the war.

    4. So far in the story, interference lessens free will because their actions become limited by what the gods command. I have more free will compared to the time of The Illiad, but I am still restricted by parents, teachers, and by authority.

    5. I choose to follow Achilles as a leader if I was fighting in the war. Although Agamemnon might be have strong traits of a leader, I think that Achilles is a better and a unique leader than Agamemnon because Agamemnon is very selfish, aggressive, but cowardly compared to Achilles. Achilles chooses rightful choices to finish the fight, although he makes mistakes and flaws. Agamemnon just wants to win to gain glory and fame. Achilles would rather “live a long life” than fighting endlessly nonstop (60). In addition, many mortals admired and respected Achilles, and he was a captain and a descendant of Zeus while Agamemnon was a king.

    A2 Literature

    1. Since the writing is by Homer, the whole story is a Homeric Simile. It’s a simile that lasts through the entire story and its comparing Agamemnon’s tears to waterfalls.

    2. Agamemnon's gifts to Achilles were "seven new tripods, untouched by fire; the weight of ten talents in gold; twenty shining cauldrons; and twelve strong, swift, prize- winning horses" (59). Agamemnon uses it as a sort of bribe, or payment in order to get Achilles to fight for the Greeks, and today its more like, and trade, not blackmail. Like "give me snacks for the answer".

    3. Achilles's character flaw is that he is that he used the gods to make decisions for himself. He would rather see Greeks die, and let his decision to fight or not be in the hands of the gods.

    4. I would choose ever lasting fame, due to the fact of being remembered. I would want to put an effect on to others and so I decided to fight the greatest war, that will be remembered for over 1000 years. I want to put an impact on peoples lives, so nothing says better than to fight.

    5. The rationale of Achilles for not joining the fight is, he knows that "Zeus, lord of Olympus, has honored" (61) him, so he stated the fact that, "need long-haired Greeks to honor me" (61). He knows that every seconds, dead or alive, that the gods will honor him. So he used that to refuse Agamemnon's request.

    Chapter 5

    1. "bronze-coated Greeks" (64). Referring Achilles and Hector as "Godlike" (62). The concept of "honor" (63).

    2. Nothing comes to mind when comparing the bond between Achilles and Patroclus to Japan now or before.

    3. Patroclus can succeed, but not so much that Achilles is shut out from the conversation. Achilles loves being feared and loves being known as the greatest Greek warrior of all. It is clear that Achilles is trying to teach Patroclus a lesson, but at the same time Achilles shows how he still cares about his honor.

    4. When gods are incorporated into the text, I believed it will give no change. The reason I say this is because Achilles does not listen to anyone, he does as he pleases, but at the same time, it is different for other men. Man fear the gods and the pray so the humans wont suffer the wrath of Apollo or lets say Zeus. So it doesn't change the will of Achilles, but changes the will for the other characters, giving them less of a free choice.

    5. For me to decide who is a better leader, it would be hard to say. Because, Achilles has the strength and he as the heart of a warrior, and when the greeks saw him, "fear entered each man's heart" (63). On the other hand, he is arrogant, does not listen to the gods, and does as he pleases, making him lack the discipline of a true leader. Agamemnon is a King, he rules all and he has the power to control and take everything he wishes, he would suck up to the warrior he dislikes the most. The only flaw that he has it that he cares too much about himself, and his greed for power goes beyond measure. So in the end, I would have to pick Achilles as a better leader.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Chapter 4
    1) The literary term that is used in this quote is a simile because a it compares two things in the text. This one is comparing Agamemnon's tears to the waterfall of the cliff.

    2) Some of the gifts that Agamemnon gives Achilles are "seven beautiful women who are skilled at handicraft" (59) and other stuff that would give Achilles back his pride. Today we would call this an apology gift and also a bribe. When we do something wrong but we need there help so we give them something as an apology but in reality you need there help really bad and there is nothing that you can do so you bribe them with stuff.

    3) Achilles's biggest character flaw is that he has too much pride. Because of his pride he does not fight the war and causes the death of his best friend Patroclus. Patroclus wore Achilles' armor and died in the battle. He was unable to help his friend.

    4) I would choose a short life with everlasting fame rather than a long life unlike Achilles. I think that living for a long life is just dull and boring. Achilles chooses a long life.

    5) Achilles feels that his pride his hurt. He says "it seems thac no one appreciaces the warrior who fights with-out rest" (59) and also because he is just stubborn.

    Chapter 5
    1) a) "bronze-coated Greeks" (63)
    b) " wide-ruling Agamemnon" (62)
    c) "Godlike Achilles" (64)

2)They were very close friends, so I think it would be tomodachi.

    3) Achilles is depending on Patroclus to obtain glory and wants the honor, but he is afraid that Patroclus would get all the glory so he is a little worried. Even in these circumstances Achilles is still thinking about himself and his own honor and pride.

    4) Because the Gods are interfering with the war, they are lessening the mortal's free will. I have alot of free will right now and my parents are restricting from these will. I would be able to get more free will when I can be independent and live by myself. The parents are like the Gods. They interfere and try to control your wills and change things.

    5) I think that Agamemnon is the better leader because he tries to sort things out. Achilles only thinks of his own pride and honor. For example when he asks his friend to fight for him and win glory but at the same time "but not so much glory that your success will less my own honor" (62) and thinks of his on glory and fame instead. Agamemnon doesn't want any more Greeks to die and wants to protect the people so he asks Achilles to fight and even offers him gifts. Agamemnon also thinks about the people and is not selfish so he is a better leader.

  5. 1.Since it is comparing with Agamemnon’s eyes to a waterfall, so its counted as a simile. It is comparing throughout the whole story because it is in the Homeric format.

    2. He plans to give Achilles ton of gifts including, "seven new tripods, untouched by fire; the weight of ten talents in gold; twenty shining cauldrons; and twelve strong, swift, prize-winning horses" (59). This shows the apology towards Achilles that is a form of a bribe. We still have this, example, “I will give you my snack so please train me” or something.

3.He can’t make good decisions, especially when he is by himself. If he can’t listen to others, he will receive many dislikes, that is a big problem for a god. I think he believes in himself too much.

    4. This is a hard decision but I will choose a short life. Both lives have pros and cons. In a long life, you can gain a lot of fame and popularity, but after awhile you will get bored and may cause problems. In the other hand, in a short life I think you can be more active, and still gain fame!

    5. What Achilles is saying is that, to quit the war because they can no longer live and should go back to their homeland. He just wants a fame that lasts long, so just decides to back to their homeland to make it easier. He thinks it is too risky to continue the battle.

    1. A)."bronze-coated Greeks" (63). B) " wide-ruling Agamemnon" (62. C) "Godlike Achilles" (64)

    2. They are very close so in English I would call them bromance. In Japanese I would call them, “nakama”, that means “team” in Japanese.

    3. I think this quote means that Achilles wants Patroclus to gain victory and honor in the fight, but Achilles doesn’t want Patroclus getting all the honor and the credit because Achilles feels that he had contributed the most in the war.

    4. Since the Gods are talking about the war, they are lessening the mortal's free will.
I have a lot of freedom. I live in the dorm now so I don't live under my parents rules, but the dorms rules. And my parents are making the money about money. I think the dorm parents and my parents are like gods, because they control you and give you a certain amount of freedom. And if you fail to do so, you will get punished for that.

5..I would definitely choose Achilles for my leader, especially in the war. Even though Agamemnon has some strong parts, Overall, I can trust Achilles more. Agamemnon is selfish, aggressive, and stupid in my opinion. Achilles make better decisions and I think he is a big man that you can trust.

  6. CHAPTER 4

    1. A simile.

    2. Some of the gifts are "seven new tripods, untouched by fire; the weight of ten talents in gold; twenty shining cauldrons" (59). They are given to Achilles by Agamemnon to apologize and uses these gifts to ‘bribe’ Achilles to join their battle

    3. Achilles has a weak side to him that is clearly shown when he depends in the gods for his revenge.

    4. I would choose living overlasting fame. I can have fun and not be boring with an everyday to peaceful of a life. Since you live only once, why not just give it your all?

    5. Since his pride and honor were taken away, and he already has Zeus helping him, he thinks he doesn’t "need long-haired Greeks to honor me" and he decided to live a longer peaceful life than a life where you can get everlasting fame, he says he will “never live to return home”

    CHAPTER 5

    1. -"the bronze-coated Greeks" (63)
    - "wide-ruling Agamemnon" (62).
    - "honor"

    2. There are not any similarities between them to Japan now or before.

    3. Achilles wants Patroclus to gain victory and honor in the fight but, Achilles loves being feared and loves being known as the greatest Greek warrior of all and he also thinks that he has contributed more than he did. It is clear that Achilles is trying to teach Patroclus a lesson, but at the same time Achilles shows how he still cares about his honor.

    4. I think interference from the gods lessens free will because the humans’ actions becomes limited anything the gods command. I think have more free will compared to the time of The Illiad, but I am still restricted by parents, teachers, and by authority since I am still not of age yet.

    5. I still do think Agememnon would be a better leader, even if he is conceited, he doesn’t run away and get revenge. I could understand Achilles’ feelings, but I think he could have worked if he have kept on insisting that Agamemnon the annoying guy to not take his prize of honour, Briseis, away. “I simply could not let a man who is my equal seize my prize of honor just because he more powerful than I am” (62). I think that Achilles is better as a soldier, than a leader, because he is better in the front lines battling. But sometimes their personality doesn’t really matter as long as he has the capabilities of a king.

  7. Chapter 4
    1.It is a simile.

    2. Agamemnon said, "I shall give swift-footed Achilles seven new tripods, untouched by fire; the weight of ten talents in gold; twenty new shining cauldrons; and twelve strong, swift, prize wining horses."(59). He also said that he would give Achilles, "seven beautiful women who are skilled at handicraft."(59). Agamemnon added, that if the gods permitted them to seize Troy, he would give Achilles a pile of bronze, and and 20 beautiful women next to Helen.

    3. Achilles always depends on others to help. Especially his mother. When he has a problem, she is always the first person he goes to. Achilles depends too much on others so he fails to make his own opinions.

    4. Honestly if there is the choice, I would choose neither. I don't want to live for very long considering I will just run out of things to do. And everlasting fame does seem cool but I don't want to be remembered for just doing something big. I mean, as time goes by, No one will really think about it in such a big way. It will not be important to them anymore. Achilles chose life over fame.

    5. Achilles chooses not to fight because because all of his hard work went to agamemnon and so he decides not to fight. Like the quote says, "He (Agamemnon) remained behind, beside his hollow ships, and from the treasures I gave him,he distributed a few, and kept the rest." , "Only from me, did e take a prize of honor."(both 60)

    Chapter 5

    1."far-shooting Apollo” (48), "bronze-coated Greeks" (61), "well defended walls" (63)

    2. I don't think there are many similarities between them and japanese history. Nothing comes to mind.

    3. It means that even if the people give him many impressive gifts and such, he will not win in honor. He may gain more "things" but not more fame nor honor.

    4. Many gods command and control the actions of the mortals so It lesses the free-will. The war causes it to lessen.

5.Agamemnon, because he makes decisions by himself. I think that because Achilles depends on his mother too much, he will not be able to make decisions on his own. I want a leader thats strong, not a leader that is strong in battle but not in confidence.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Chapter 4
    1. A simile is used when Homer describes Agamemnon's tears as a waterfall falling down the mountains.

    2. Agamemnon offers many presents to bribe Archilles in the principle of a gift filled with honor and respect such as "twenty most beautiful women next to Helen" (59). Today, universities and companies recruit high-educated scholars through the name of scholarship and high salary.

    3. Although Archilles is strong and courageous, he is unable to think in people's positions other than his own. While other warriors risk their lives at the battlefield, he decides to run away from war just because some of the citizens are idly hiding from death.

    4. Tired of being used by the kings and the leaders, Archilles chooses to live a long and peaceful life rather than a life with honor and early death in the war. I personally would want eternal fame, because even though I would die my name might be passed down to further generations as a hero who helped earn victory for the country.

    5. For Archilles, the position of never being alive to return home, although gaining eternal fame, was fearful than losing all honor but returning home safely (60).

    Chapter 5
    2. Archilles sees Patroclus as a wise man who must be respected, but at the same time he is afraid of him backstabbing or abandoning him on hard times. Unfortunately, I am unable to come up with a connection in Japan though.

    3. The words in which Achilles says to Patroclus shows Archilles's fear against . "Win enough glory that the Greeks will return Briseis to me along with many impressive gifts, but not so much glory that your success will less my own honor" (62).

    5. Agamemnon is a better leader compared to Archilles because he had listened to other opinions and thought about the life of warriors. Although he once considered retreating from war, wide-ruling Agamenmon decided not to after asking for opinions of the ones who actually held the arms and fought; he noticed that by giving up Troy it would disrespect the warriors who waited for their honored death more than nine years. On the other hand, Archilles had not thought about his high position at war - with him being a mighty warrior, the results would change dramatically - and decided to hide just because he wants a long life. Agamenmon considers war and peace as a concept in which he should not decide the quantity not only for himself but within his whole army, while Archilles believes they are a problem between life and pride for each of the warriors in single substances.

  9. Chapter 4.
    1. I think this quote is an example of both personification and a simile. Homer gave a face to a cliff and also compared Agamemnon's feelings to the waterfall.
2.The gifts that Agamemnon bestows upon Achilles are "... seven new tripods, untouched by fire; the weight of ten talents in gold; twenty shining cauldrons; and twelve strong, swift, prize-winning horses"(59). Even today people are still very materialistic, in fact, probably even more. Giving materialistic things is a simple solution of any problem today, which can also be considered as a bribe. That also lead to corruption these days.
    3. Achilles weak character flaw is that he is always depending on somebody else, gods, in particular.
Every time he had a problem he would usually go to his goddess mother and ask for help. Which is quite ironic because he is very good in fighting and physically strong, but always stayed as a mommy's boy.
    4. Achilles chose to live a long life over the everlasting fame. When I first thought about this question, the answer came to my mind right away- live a long life like many people wish, but then I imagined if I only had a chance to live until I was 21. That would probably be the best time of my 16 years of life. I would be famous and doing whatever I want. I won't have to depend on anyone else and accomplish all of my dreams. I'm sure every one has that part of their heart that just wants to live a crazy life and not end up like an ordinary 80 year old who dies quietly.
    5. Achille's rationale for not joining the war was that he wanted to get home alive. Just like the question above he chose a long life over everlasting fame. "My goddess mother told me that if I stay here and fight at Troy, I will never live to return home, although I will have gained eternal fame" (60).

    Chapter 5.
    1. Hollow ships (65). The bronze-coated Greeks (59). Horse-taming Trojans (64).
2.In my opinion their relationship cannot be compared to relationships in Japan. At least because japanese people don't tend to get very close...
    3. This quote is a great example of many sides of Achille's personality. He wanted to get as many gifts as would be possible because of their victory, but at the same time didn't want the glory and admiration to go to Patroclus.
    4. Being under gods' control lessened mortals' freedom, because most of them admired and honored what ever the gods commanded the normal people to do and also the mortals were scared of the divine beings since they had extraordinary power. Right now my main obstacles from freedom are my parents, who say that while I live in their house I live under their rules. So as soon as I move out, I'm free to do whatever I want.
    5. In my opinion Agamemnon is a better leader, because he always had that strategy going on in his head just like any other leader. He had a great sense of leadership and craving for victory even though he didn't fully accomplish his goals and wishes. Achilles in my opinion either didn't fully understand what he must do or just acted very immature: "I would not rejoin the Greeks until Hector threatened my own ships'" (62).

    ReplyDelete
  10. 1. Two literally terms at work in the quote "As a waterfall pours down the face of a cliff into the dark stream below, so Agamemnon stood weeping before the gathering" are simile and personification (58).

    2. Some gifts that Agamemnon bestows upon Achilles are "'seven new tripods, untouched by fire; the weight of ten talents in gold; twenty shining cauldrons; and twelve strong, swift, prize-winning horses'"(59). Nowadays we would probably give money to people to do our work for us, some what like a hired mercenary. This way of exchanging "goods" is called bribing.

    3. Achilles biggest character flaws are that he depends on the gods way too much to control his thoughts and acts and anger changes his entire characteristics. Instead of being a hero with a lot of pride, he loses all of that because of anger. Because of that anger he is unable to think properly and sanely.

    4. Achilles chose a long life over ever lasting fame. I would choose ever lasting fame though. Cause anyways at some point you will die. There's no real point in life so why live a long? When you could be remembered through generations. Maybe you would never know that people still praise you, but the concept of knowing that people know you for something marvelous you did is a great feeling.

    5. Achilles is rational for not joining the war because he doesn't need "'the long-haired Greeks to honor'" him because he has already been honored by Zeus and for him that honor will last for as long as he lives (61).

    1."bronze-coated Greeks" (61).
    "horse-taming Trojans" (61).
    "wide-ruling Agamemnon" (62).

    2. I dont really know any Japanese term for Patroclus' and Achilles' relationship, but since Patroclus was like a father to Achilles that could be one part. Or maybe a senpai kind of relationship maybe. Because Achilles was the stronger one and had control over strength.

    3. I think the quote "Win enough glory that the Greeks will return Briseis to me along with many impressive gifts, but not so much glory that your success will less my own honor" means that Achilles wants Patroclus to gain some glory and fame but not enough to surpass Achilles' honor because he thinks he has contributed too much to this war to be over taken by pride from someone (62).

    4. The interference between the gods in the mortals' war decreases the mortals' free will. I have a lot of free will and I don't feel like I'm restricted too much from anything. But maybe my elderly restrict me from doing things cause I'm still seen as a minor. I think I will be less restricted once I'm an adult and I can choose things on my own.

    5. I know Agamemnon is a better leader than Achilles, because he isn't the one being ignorant and staying by his ship and allowing all his fellow mates die in battle. Agamemnon has more experience because he is a king and leads a bigger amount of people. Agamemnon was also the first one to send an apology to Achilles. This shows that he is forgiving and is a good trait for a leader. His way of apologizing was to give a tremendous amount of gifts to Achilles and in the end he stated in the end he stated that "All this I shall do for Achilles if he will put aside his anger" (59). This shows a lot of forgiveness and a sign of a better leader.

    1. Simile. Because simile is what contains words like "like" or "as", and this quote contains "as"
    2. Agamemnon bestowed:"seven new tripods, untouched by fire; the weight of ten talents in gold; twenty shining cauldrons; and twelve strong, swift prize-sinning horses."(59).
    3. Achilles's flaw would probably be the fact that he has enough courage to stop fighting for agamemnon. He is unable to accept agamemnon's apology.
    4. I'd definitely chose long lasting life. Achilles chose a long lasting life, since he decided not to fight...until his friend, patroclus died, but that was for friendship.
    5. There are couple of reasons, but one of them is that because achilles thought agamemnon's gift were hateful to him, and achilles didn't want to be deceived again. Achilles knew that Agamemnon "does not keep his word"(60).

    1. "bronze-coated Greeks"(63), "wide-ruling Agamemnon" (62), "Godlike Achilles" (64).
    2. If equivalent means meaning, (i checked the dictionary) then in japan, it would be revenge, since in the japan in the past was about killing eachother, because who killed who. In other words, friendship.
    3. The quote means that achilles wanted patroclus to win the battle, but telling patroclus to not to get more fame/respect than achilles.
4.lessen, because Gods have more power over them, and i think I have good amount of free will, doing whatever I want thats not wrong, mostly.. The law, my parents, cultures and kind of religions. I would get more free will when I am an adult, since I am going to be on my own, with more responsibility.
    5. I would say that achilles is a better leader. Because achilles knows enough, not to deceive his own friend. Achilles was smart enough to accept agamemnon's apology, thinking that he can buy achilles with things. When protoclus was gone, Achilles tried to take revenge on hector, but when achilles ditched agamemnon, agamemnon just left him, asking him "to rule your pride, and let pity enter your heart"(60), you, meaning Achilles.

  12. Chapter 4

    1. The literary term is working as a simile and a personification. "the waterfall pours down the face of a cliff" shows how the cliff has a face and the "As a waterfall pours down, so Agamemnon stood weeping before the gathering" describes how Agamemnon weeped.

    2. In order to win the war, Agamemnon bestows upon Achilles numerous of overwhelming gifts such as "seven new tripods, untouched by fire; the weight of ten talents in gold; twenty shining cauldrons; and twelve strong, swift, prize-winning horses" (59). The gifts would be equivalents of today as it is a form bribery that includes materialistic things that people nowadays tends to be. It could be viewed as an apology gift in return to show how sorry we are.

    3. Achilles' biggest flaw is not being able to control his action and emotion. At first, he had excessive pride as he was insulted, in losing his prize of honour. Then, it led him to being angry and losing his sense of independence. He went to his goddess mother and asked for help, and this shows how he has someone greater like the Gods on his side which is not fair for the other greek mortals.

    4. I would choose a long life because I would be satisfied with my own life and be happy about it. If I chose everlasting fame even though it is a great feeling to have to be remembered, I still wouldn't be able to have it when I'm dead so it's unnecessary to me. In this chapter, Achilles chose to have a long life but eventually got driven to have an everlasting fame in the future chapters.

    5. Achilles' rationale for not joining the fight was although he would "have gained eternal fame" if he had fought, he would "never live to return home" and thus not having a long life (60). He also thinks that he is unappreciated for his acts since his "prize of honor" had been taken from him after what he has fought for Agamemnon while Agamemnon "remained behind, beside his hollow ships" for treasures (60). Plus, he already has the honor from "Zeus, lord of Olympus" so, he doesn't need "long-haired Greeks to honor" him (61).

    Chapter 5

    1. The "bronze-coated greeks" are used numerous of times to describe the greeks (61). "Wide-ruling Agamemnon" phrase shows how powerful Agamemnon is (62). "Swift-footed Achilles" is also a phrase to describe how fast Achilles moves (63).

    2. I don't really know anything that is equivalent to Achilles and Patroclus relationship in Japan. Their relationship does show how strong their friendship are like what a best friend would do for the other.

    3. This quote shows how Achilles still wants his honor from the Greeks. Therefore, he asked Patroclus to win the war by doing something expected rather than unexpected so that Achilles would still have his honor after the victory.

    4. The interference of the gods lessen the mortals' free will as they Gods is biased towards some mortals such as Agamemnon and are in favour of Achilles just because he is the son of a goddess. We don't have that much free will with our parents around since they are adults and have more power over us, such us giving us our allowances. However, we would eventually have free will from our parents after we get our own job and have our own money that we worked for and our own family.

    5. I think Agamemnon is a better leader than Achilles because how they are able to control their pride. Agamemnon does have his pride and had no right to take away Achilles' prize of honor, but since he is a king, he gets what he wants. He was just blind by his position, as he doesn't want his pride to be taken away. While Achilles had the traits of leading a good army but not the Greeks since he knows that they won't win unless he joins the battle not "until Hector threatened" his "own ships" (62).

  13. Chapter 4
    1. It is a example of simile, which pouring waterfall expressing the Agamemnon's tears.

    2. Agamemnon was planning to give Achilles "seven new tripods, untouched by fire; the weight of ten talents in gold; twenty shining cauldrons; and twelve strong, swift, prize- winning horses" for his gift (59).

    3. He was scared because his mother told him he will die in the Trojan war. He should have more confidence in himself, since if he had gone to the war earlier, his best friend Patroclus wouldn't have died.

    4. Achilles chose life first, but after the death of Patroclus he stood up to fight, meaning he chose ever-lasting fame. I would pick life because I would not notice if someone is talking about me after im dead.

    5. He feared that he was going to die in the war. He also thought "it seems that no one appreciates the warrior who fights with-out rest" so he rested so people will honor him (59).

    Chapter 5

    1."bronze-coated Greeks"(63)
    "wide-ruling Agamemnon" (62)
    "Godlike Achilles" (64)

    2. We can call them "dai shinyuu" in japanese meaning they are bestfriends.

    3. He means he still wants honor, so he is telling him to share the glory Patroclus gains in the war.

    4. It does, such as when Achilles was telling his mother about how much anger he has towards Agamemnon, Patroclus getting killed because of Apollo and etcc. I noticed people have much more freedom than I do because my friends often calls me to hang out but my parents chooses if im going or not. Even if i argue, they win, so I am kinda looking forward to become an adult to have my own responsibility.

    5. I think Agamemnon has the better leadership. That is because he has wiser than Achilles is, he is wide rulling than he is, and he gained that through progress in life. Even though he have done nasty things to Achilles, he has the brain to forgive what he did. All this I shall do for Achilles if he will put aside his anger" (59).

  14. 1.Its a simile and its referring to Agamemnon crying.
2.Agamemnon`s gifts were cauldrons and some gold, horses, tripods and seven beautiful women. "I shall also give him seven beautiful women who are skilled at handicraft, among them Briseis"(Rosenberg 59).
3.He is unable to make dissuasions on his own without talking to his friends or his mother.
4.I will choose to live because i want to spend a lot of time with my family. Achilles on the other hand chose to have a short life but gain eternal fame.
5.He doesn't join the fighting because he is too angry at Agamemnon who stole his prize of honor. Plus he listens to his mother who wants him to live. "My goddess mother has told me that if i stay here and fight at Troy, I will never live to return home, although i will have gained eternal fame"(Rosenberg 60).

    1."Bronze coated Greeks"(61).
    "Son of Atreus"(58).
    "Son of Peleus"(63).
2.All i can think of is brotherhood.
    3. In this quote Achilles want Patroclus to win glory to take back his prize but if he wins to much glory more then him Patroclus will be honored more.
4.In this whole story, gods interfere a lot. For example Apollo basically killed Patroclus. "When Patroclus, undaunted, made a fourth attempt to climb the wall, Apollo stopped him with a terrifying cry"(Rosenberg 63). I think i have alot of freedom. But i want to live in different countries but to do that i will need to be a adult.
5.Achilles because he is a much better warrior then Agamemnon. And he has a lot more companionship with the soldiers. Therefore Achilles has more leadership and has more respect.

  15. CHAPTER 4
    1. It is a simile for it has the word “as” which compares the waterfall to the action of crying.
    2. The gifts Agamemnon offered are "seven new tripods, untouched by fire; the weight of ten talents in gold; twenty shining cauldrons" (59). This could be a form of bribing, where one offers something to convince someone to do a certain deed for you. For example, bribing a referee with a car to side with you’re team during a match.
    3. Achilles’s flaw is that he values his fame and honor over anything else. He was therefore unable to control his anger towards Agamemnon when his pride was hurt. Also he relies on the gods for decision-making. So when the time comes he is unable to make decisions on his own.
    4. I would chose a long life, for I value a life where I can look after a family and contribute positively to the society. Achilles chooses the long life.
    5. His reasoning for not fighting was that he did “not need the long haired Greeks to honor” him(61). He then states that “Zeus, lord of Olympus” has honored him, and that it would mean that he would be honored for as long as he lives. This brings us back to the point of his values and the fact that honor is a big part of his life. Also his mother wants him to stay at the ships for otherwise he would die at war. “My goddess mother told me that if I stay and fight at Troy, I will never live to return home, although I will have gained eternal fame” (60).

    CHAPTER 5
    1. “bronze-coated Greeks”(61 & 59). “Horse-taming Trojans”(61). “wide-ruling Agamemnon”(61).
    2. Patroclus was much wiser for he had more experience because of his age, and Achilles respected that. This is similar to the senpai kouhai relationship we see in Japan. We may call it respect for the more experienced or a seniority system.
    3. The quote, in an intelligible way, would mean that Patroclus should do enough to convince the Greeks to return Briseis and gifts, but not to the extent that Patroclus would eclipse Achilles’s honor to the gods. This would require Patroclus not to get cocky during the war, but as the story goes he does, and he loses his life because of it.
    4. This lessons the free will. Since the superior powers come into play, mortals are restricted to there abilitys and must respect the superiors in the process. In the story it is the gods that restrict it, and it is the fact that the mortals honor the gods so much that stops them from having free will. When a person becomes superior he or she gets more free will, for he or she has more control of her life and of those around her.
    5. I would side with Agamemnon. Agamemnon has more experience for he is the ruler of a bigger empire. Achilles is more of a fighter and his lust for honor may result in downfall for his fellow colleagues, if he were to lead. When arguing who should be the leader, Nestor the wise king, says “You Achilles, should not think you can fight against a king. Although you are the mighty son of a goddess, Agamemnon is greater than you are, for he is king over more people” (51). Both are flawed in there prides but Agamemnon would edge Achilles for he is a better and more confident decision maker, which are attributes a ruler would need.

  16. Chapter 4

    1) Homer uses an example of simile, comparing the tears of Agamemnon to a waterfall.

    2) Agamemnon offered numerous gifts including cauldrons and gold, as well as horses and twenty of the “most beautiful Trojan women next to Helen”(59). By desperately offering gifts to earn Achilles’s forgiveness, he uses a form of bribing.

    3) Enormous pride and past experiences prevent Achilles to trust Agamemnon to keep his word.

    4) Achilles chooses a long life over everlasting fame, and I would do the same. Dying for honor is a respectable act, but I would rather lead a long and full life than to die for others so that they would remember me.

    5) His mother had told him that if he went off to fight the Trojans he would “never live to return home” (60). Choosing life over eternal fame is another reason, and he did not want any more honor, for he already had been honored by Zeus.

    Chapter 5

    1) The Greeks are referred to as “bronze coated” (61), Achilles as “godlike”, and the Tronjans as “horse taming” (61).

    2) Achilles and Patroclus behave a bit like how senpai and kohai do in Japan. One is more experienced and respected or simply older than the other, but they could be friends and have affection towards one another.

    3) By winning, Achilles wants to be recognized and glorified for what he thinks he deserves. He wants the credit for their victory, and doesn’t want Agamemnon to overshadow him in honor.

    4) Two different gods might hear a mortal’s wish and react to it in completely different ways, so it lessens the mortal’s free will. At this point in life I do not feel so restricted from anything, because as I grow older I start to realize what my parents want might turn out being the best for myself. There are of course disagreements, probably more bigger ones to come, but once I become an adult and gain enough responsibility, more freedom for making choices will come.

    5) I would choose Agamemnon as a leader, simply because he realizes the errors in his ways. He takes responsibility for his actions and tries to make it up by giving Achilles gifts. Even though he was stubborn and had excessive pride, he cared for the Greeks enough to want to lead them to victory, choosing them over his own pride. The only thing that persuades Achilles to fight is the destruction of his ships and the life of his closest friend.

  17. Chapter 4
    1. This quote contains as a simile because it talks about the weeping eyes of Angamenmon to a waterfall pouring down the face of a cliff. Also because the quote mentions the word like, "was" or "like" which is referred to a simile.

    2. Some of the gifts that Angamemnom bestows upon Achillies were "Seven new tripods, untouched by fire;the weight of ten talents in gold;twenty shiny cauldrons;and twelve strong, swift, prize-winning horses"(59) This shows the apology towards Achillies that forms a bribe.

    3. Achillie's biggest flaw is that he depends on other gods for his struggles and fears. He doesn't have enough courage to stand up for himself, when he has a problem, he goes straight for his mom when it comes for a help.

    4. I would choose a long life like Achillies, I rather live a long life with someone I love than dying with all the attention.

    5. Achillies rationale for not joining the war is that so he can live longer, he thought going to battle was too risky. Besides his death, he wanted to go back to homeland. Achillies choose to live longer than ever lasting fame. "My goddess mother told me that if I stay here and fight Troy, I will never live to return home, although i will have gained eternal fame"(60).

    Chapter 5.

    1. The phrases:
"The Bronze-coated Greeks" is used frequently (63).
    "Wide ruling Agamemnon"(48).
    "Man-slaying hector"(50).

    2. patroclus and Achillies having a powerful friendship together.

    3. Achillies want patrocus to gain glory and honor, but at the same time, he is scared that Patrocus will get the glory and honor all to himself when Achillies feel like contributed in the war the most.

    4. The interference between the gods in the mortals 'war decreases the mortals' free will. Human being parents usually let their children do whatever they want at the age of 18.

    5. I think Agamenmnom is a better leader compared to Achillies because he had more experience and has more strategies when it comes to ushering. I find Achillies very immature and the leader who can't stand up for himself which is very kiddish.
